Marion County Medical Society
The
Marion County Medical Society was established in the 1920s as a local affiliate
organization of the American Medical Association and the Florida Medical
Association which represents physicians on a national and state level,
respectively. The Marion County Medical Society began with five physicians and
has grown to number 331 physicians serving the Marion County area.
The purpose of the Marion County Medical Society is to assume the general direction
of the affairs of the medical profession in the area of its
jurisdiction. The Medical Society contstantly strives for the scientific and
moral advancement of all doctors in medicine for the improvement of medical
services and health facilities locally.
What can the Marion County Medical Society do for you? The Society offers a
number of services to the public such as general medical information about
disease, treatment, and prevention. It also offers educational data on physician
members (i.e. place and dates of medical training, specialty, board
certification, etc.) While the Society does not recommend one physician over
another, it may offer various alternatives concerning specialties, open or
closed practices and what type of physician is needed for specific medical
problems.
"We Care" is the indigent care program sponsored by the
Marion County Medical Society. Through "We Care," area physicians donate their services to those who have no other means of accessing
medical care. This program is performed in conjunction with
the Marion County Public Health Department, local hospitals, and a walk-in clinic,
Community Health Services.
Post 9/11/01, the Society has been an integral component to the development
of a Physician Medical Strike Team. A team of approximately 150 physicians who
have dedicated volunteer time in education and training to serve in a terrorist
attack or weapons of mass destruction event.
In addition, the Society offers member physicians updates on and assistance
with legal and regulatory issues, community representation, public relations,
continuing medical education, networking opportunities, nine educational dinner
meetings per year and nine newsletter publications, Porgress Notes.
Your county Medical Society is here to promote the health and wellbeing of
