Munroe Heart Hybrid OR

In June of 2012, Munroe Heart opened the doors on a brand new Hybrid Operating Room. This versatile environment allows our surgeons to carry out complex minimally invasive procedures with the flexibility to perform both open and complex procedures in the same room. A unique team approach combine the experience and talents of our heart surgeons and interventional cardiologists enable complex cardiac interventions through minimally invasive treatments in this new Hybrid OR setting.

Operating rooms need to adapt easily to different surgical procedures and accommodate current and future surgical technologies as needed. The Hybrid OR allows heart surgeons and cardiologists to work in tandem on structural heart disease intervention procedures. The cardiac Hybrid OR unifies the best aspects of cardiology and cardiac surgery by providing a diagnostic/operative environment with the most advanced imaging technology. Patients in this OR receive treatments ranging from rhythm device procedures to Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).

In the Hybrid OR in order to facilitate quick, informed decision-marking amongst interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists and radiologists the highest levels of quality control and the most modern surgical equipment are utilized. Cutting-edge X-ray and 3-D imaging devices allow the clinical team to provide the highest quality care by providing a view of the structures and repairs inside the body in near real-time so that they can evaluate the procedure and begin more advanced operations immediately, if necessary.

In the Hybrid OR, patients undergo hybrid, or combined procedures; heart valve implantation and repair of the thoracic aorta through a tiny access in the groin are also performed in this high-tech environment. In October 2012, Munroe was among the first in North Central Florida to perform the innovative TAVR heart valve repair. These procedures performed in this hybrid setting are done without opening the chest and allow for a significant reduction in the time spent in the hospital which leads to faster recovery times for the patient.
