No Public Subsidies

Nothing makes my blood boil more than to see the city and county giving our tax dollars to private businesses. Sitel Worldwide Corp. is the latest example. At the same time, the taxpayers are asked to support Munroe Regional Medical Center and the Marion County school system by voting on referendums in the upcoming elections to increase our property taxes.

I am a tried and true Democrat, believing our tax dollars need to support the most vulnerable citizens — that is, children, the disabled and the elderly.

But I am also the owner of a private business, putting up my own money to meet a need in the community. My belief is that people who can start up their own companies need to do so without taxpayer money — ever. Tax dollars should not be used to help private businesses. The argument we all hear is that it will create jobs.

Sitel says it will pay 500 workers $20,000 a year, which is $10 million a year. This sounds like something too good to be true. It probably is. But even if it does hold true and is a good “deal,” I believe, as a taxpayer, that I should not have to pay for private businesses to move here.

No public incentives for private businesses.
