Parkinson's Disease Wellness Program

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, at least 1 million people are believed to suffer from Parkinson's disease, and about 50,000 new cases are reported each year in the United States. These figures are expected to increase as the population ages.

If you've received a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, you'll need to work closely with your doctors to find a treatment plan that offers you the greatest relief from symptoms with the fewest side effects. Certain lifestyle changes also may help make living with Parkinson's disease easier.

LifeTime's Parkinson Disease Program can help you.

LSVT® LOUD (Speech Therapy)

Virtually every person (89%) with Parkinson disease will have problems with speech that start early in the disease process and that will progressively diminish their quality of life.

The area's only LSVT Certified speech pathologist and physical therapist are at Munroe.

LSVT®LOUD speech therapy helps restore oral communication and motor coordination in individuals with Parkinson disease beyond what other interventions offer. LSVT®LOUD patients are more effective and emotionally engaged communicators after treatment. This intensive voice treatment program is based on motor learning theory.

LSVT®LOUD research has demonstrated:
  • Improved vocal loudness.
  • Improved speech intelligibility.
  • More facial expression.
  • Improved swallowing.

The National Institutes of Health has documented the LSVT®LOUD Parkinson-specific speech therapy is effective. Patient speech will become louder and easier to understand when LSVT®LOUD is learned.

  • If you are experiencing any changes in your speech or voice, be sure to tell your doctor. Ask for a referral and a prescription for a speech evaluation and treatment.
  • If you have not noticed changes in your speech, but a spouse, caretaker or friend has - pay attention to their comments. One aspect of the speech disorder is that the person with Parkinson disease is often "unaware" of the changes in speech or voice.

The sooner you obtain a speech evalulation and start speech therapy, the better.

LSVT®BIG (Physical Therapy)

The LSVT®BIG program applies the principles and approach of LSVT®LOUD to improving major motor skills, gait, limb movement and balance. LSVT®BIG adheres to principles of practice promoting strength, motor learning, and changes in brain function. Initial research funded by the National Institutes of Health has shown LSVT®BIG to enhance larger amplitude whole body functional movements for up to three months.

LSVT®BIG research has demonstrated:

  • Better balance.
  • Improved gait.
  • Faster walking with bigger steps.
  • Improved arm swing.

Upon completion of LSVT®BIG training, we recommend regular "tune ups" every three months, to sustain adherence to home programs, and increase community participation. It is essential that LSVT® treatments be delivered by an LSVT® Certified clinician. LifeTime Center has the area's only LSVT® Certified speech pathologist and physical therapist.

LSVT®BIG and LOUD programs include 16 individual therapy sessions (4 times per week for 4 weeks) and an ongoing wellness program. We recommend and provide the ongoing wellness program to keep your voice LOUD and your steps BIG.
